dc.description.abstractSelf injury is said to be the most prevailing behavior among adolescents and the individuals practicing such acts are prone to mental health problems. The current study endeavored to explore the prevalence of self injurious behaviors and mental health problems in adolescence. For this point, at first phenomenology was explored form 20 school children through open ended questions succumbing a list of 17 items followed by expert validation. After pilot study, a self report measure Self Injurious Behaviors Scale (SIBS) was made which included demographic variables with 17 items on 4 point Likert scale was given to 300 school students with age range of 11-20 years along with AQC, SCPS and EMBU-C. Prevalence was explored and it revealed that starvation, scratching wound and stepping on warm floor were most prevalent ways of self injury and boys were more prone to self injury as compared to girls. There was significant relationship between self injurious behaviors and mental health problems. Private schools, parental rejection, maternal anxious rearing, attachment patterns and self injurious behaviors were found to be the significant predictors of mental health problems. Results were discussed in terms of gender differences, family system, school system and culture with its clinical application.en_US
