Abstract
This study analyzes Loss and multiculturalism in Eliot's selected poetry. It identifies various stylistic devices used by Eliot in his poetry that has served as a tool to promote aspects of Loss and Multiculturalism in his poetry. After delineating various stylistics tools used in general in poetry and specifically in Eliot the discussion turns towards those stylistics devices which are the harbinger of loss and multicultural aspects in Eliot. Three of his very famous poems were selected for this purpose; “The Waste Land”, “Prufrock” and “Hollow Men”. Out of the list of various stylistic devices two groups of the stylistic devices were marked. First of all the devices of Irony, symbolism, imagery ,alliteration and dialogue were interpreted in relation to Eliot's selected poems excavating loss .These devices very clearly reveals that Eliot uses images ,symbols ,alliterative words and irony to express loss and melancholy which flutters its feathers hovering over his poetry especially the post-World War 1 poetry. Secondly allusions ,multi languages and mythic method were considered as devices to be interpreted from his selected poems to find out whether the element of multiculturalism is present in his poetry .Multicultural aspects peeps from his selected poems in the form of various allusions that are sometimes classical or modern ,sometimes religious or historical and all of his allusions represent various cultures and multicultural aspects .In addition to allusion his timeless ness and fragmentation in structure in contrast to the typical narrative method and his use of amalgamation of various languages solicits the multicultural aspects in his poetry .
