Abstract
The study was designed to see how the family environment, self-concept, gaming addiction, and quality of relationship interrelate among online gamers. 199 males were selected between the age group of 18-40 years who played aggressive as well as non- aggressive games online for about 8-14 hours daily by purposive sampling. Four standardized self-report measures included Game Addiction Inventory for Adults (Wong & Hodgins, 2014), Quality of Relationship Inventory (Hendrick et al., 1998), Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales III (Olson et al., 1985), and Self-concept Scale (Robson, 1989; Romans, Martin & Mullen, 1996). The results indicated a positive relationship of adaptable family environment with positive self-concept and good quality of relationships among online gamers but a negative relationship with their gaming addiction. Self-concept also has a negative relationship with gaming addiction as well as poor quality of relationships. A Linear regression analysis revealed that the family environment, self-concept, and gaming addiction are significant predictors of the quality of relationships of gamers. Results from a t-test also found that online gamers playing aggressive games reported more negative self-concept high gaming addiction and poor quality of relationships than those playing non-aggressive games.
