| dc.description.abstract | The study aims at investigating the discourse of modern media which is propagating mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression among individuals in society. It explores the socially embedded themes of power inequality, discrimination, and social injustice in modern media by building its theoretical foundation from the Faircloughian three-dimensional framework(Fairclough, 1995). The analysis procedure used is a mix-method approach. For the quantitative approach, the data were collected through a survey questionnaire with N=62 respondents. The qualitative analysis is based on the digital media discourse for which the researcher studied a case of cyberbullying and criticism over a public figure, Ahmed Godil (PSL 5, 2020 ground show host). The data were randomly collected from Twitter and Instagram in the form of posts, comments, and tweets as well as from two mainstream media channels SamaaTV and BolTV in the form of public talks (2020). The study observes the linguistic styles that hinge different discursive practices on media, and also how this effect individuals’ mental and physical health. The researcher hasanalyzed percentage graphs of google questionnaire responses to answer the objectives and research questions. The reliability statistics test with α= .914 Cronbach’s alpha value demonstrates the reliability of the Likert-scale instrument of N=30 items. The findings depict that, 85.5% of people of N=62 believe in the fact that modern media is a major source of bullying in the form of criticism,trolling, false news, violence, etc. which is a serious threat to mental health. People with an 83.9% ratio believe that abusive language, hate speech, and harsh words are being used while criticizing others which prove to be mentally hurtful for the victim. The researcher believes that the study would make its contribution in creating awareness for further researchers so that they can suggest strategies to control unnecessary discursive practices like criticism of media. | |
