Given that nursing as a profession is perceived as a female profession as it pertains to care giving and nurturing, two characteristics that are generally perceived as feminine qualities. Being a generally female oriented profession it falls on the lower side of the pay scale. Qualitative research method is used to analyse their socio-economic problems and the perceptions of society including family, peers, female colleagues and the administration of the hospital as well as the perceptions of male nurses about themselves. Series of interviews conducted aims at understanding how males in this profession of nursing cope with the socio-economic challenges that come with being in a female oriented profession such as nursing. The social fabric of a society like Pakistan is intricately woven with religion and tradition, the two often understood as synonymous hence gender roles in such a society are rigid and deviation from such defined gender roles can have some serious implications in the private and professional lives of individuals
