Abstract
Women are often pressured by societal norms, such as the practice of dowry, which diminish their inner strength and dignity by enforcing outdated expectations and materialistic demands. Dowry, traditionally given by a bride's family at marriage, is believed to ensure her happiness. However, this practice places a heavy emotional and financial burden on families and creates no real guarantee of a secure or happy married life. Many women continue to face discrimination, oppression, and negative societal perceptions based on the quantity of dowry they bring, with some even experiencing lasting trauma as a result. This antiquated custom affects not only women but also entire families, fostering a cycle of stress and societal pressure. Though dowry is banned in many regions, it persists, particularly affecting the socioeconomically disadvantaged. This article highlights the urgent need for a social movement to combat dowry-related discrimination and to elevate women’s dreams, aspirations, and intrinsic worth beyond traditional and materialist metrics. Real happiness and security in marriage cannot be achieved through wealth but through mutual respect and equality.
