| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to understand the role of media during the reporting of cricket matches between India and Pakistan. This study explores different linguistic patterns used by the media of Pakistanand India which creates an effect of war and hatred among the people of both countries. This work is solely an effort to distinguish the linguistic choices used by the electronic media which make the game of cricket a matter of national prestige. James Paul Gee's(2011) Building tool is taken as instrument for the analysis. The data are further strengthened through triangulation method by taking public opinion through questionnaires. The focus of this research wasto see how a mere game, a source of entertainment, is turned into a war or battle between two ideological rivals, and the role that media plays to stimulate emotions. The findings suggested that the media influences the viewers in terms of constructing negative ideologies and the language used in reporting of the matches instigate viewers'emotions and makes ‘a mere game' a ‘mother of all clashes', ‘ideological battle between nations' and a way to express prestige of country.The findings of questionnaire projected that majority of participants think that the media should avoid spiteful language and should spread positivity through their reports. The researcher is hopeful that this work on the Instigative Role of Media in the cricket reports would pave way for the future researchers to explore more aspects of media instigation not only in the field of cricket but other political, religious and social aspects within the state as well at international level. | en_US |
