Abstract
Sense of place is an essential concept in urban design. It makes urban environments
high-quality and livable. It refers to a particular location's unique characteristics and
qualities that create a distinctive identity and evoke emotions and attachment among its
users. To achieve a sense of place in urban design, designers must consider several factors,
including the site's history, context, character, and the needs and preferences of the people
who use the space.
In the context of urban design, this research offers a framework for comprehending
the connection between the physical characteristics of a place and people's perceptions of
that place. GPO Chowk, an important public square in Lahore is studied to illustrate this
concept, and four physical characteristics and four perceptual attributes were examined. In
this research mix-method approach is used. Physical Charcteristics are studied through
Field survey while for perceptual qualities questionnaire survey is conducted.
Each physical and perceptual characteristic has its own set of indicators, which are
looked at separately. The outcomes generated through questionnaire and field survey
would be beneficial in maintaining this historic square's eccentric and enhancing its sense
of place. By educating themselves on how to improve their sense of place in urban contexts,
architects and urban planners will be better able to improve the design of today's modern
built environments.
The research's conclusions offer suggestions and design strategies for enhancing
new contemporary developments while protecting G.P.O. Chowk's sense of place.
