Abstract
Development relies heavily on the availability of the fresh water resources. Insufficient water supply hinders economic development as low-grade water. As Karachi is facing major water crises, soon Lahore is also going to face same issue as the ground water depletion carries out rapidly, and there are no other resources for fresh water.
Rainwater is available in many regions, but often it is only discharged into drainage system or the nearest river instead of being utilized. Especially in urban areas like Lahore, where fresh water demand is steadily increasing, rainwater management becomes a crucial parameter for sustainable urban environment. Rainwater, if discharged into the drainage systems, interacts with solid waste and becomes liquid waste itself and its hazardous for environment. However, the negative effects of area sealing and rainwater drainage, especially decreased groundwater recharge and increasing flood risks in expanding urban environments.
The thesis is based on the technique of rainwater harvesting as a source of water resource management to fulfill the water demand. This model is applied on the Sukh Chayn Gardens Lahore, Sukh Chayn Gardens has installed Stormwater Drainage System for the collection of rainwater. In this thesis rainwater harvesting models has been proposed on both plot and neighborhood level. And adopted different techniques for rainwater harvesting for both scales. Further on the analysis has been done for the cost of installation material at both levels to seen that the model is suitable for urban environment or not.
