Abstract
The scientists select the different plants for screening their components that helped to
control the bacterial growth. Ziziphus sativa belonged to “Rhamnaceae” family. The
common name of ziziphus sativa is berry in Persian it is known as ziziphus lotus.
Ziziphus sativa is traditionally important medicinal plant. The antibacterial activity of
ziziphus sativa was checked by the disc agar diffusion method. Four different solvents
extracts (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous) was used to check the
antibacterial effect. Two gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella
pneumoniae) and three gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus
mutans, Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae) were used to analyzed the antibacterial
effect. All the strains showed antibacterial effect except Streptococcus mutans. While
the ethyl acetate showed the best result among all extracts. Ethyl acetate showed 70mm
zone of inhibition in 1% of plant extract while n-hexane extract showed no results
against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and
Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae strain. So it is concluded that ethyl acetate,
chloroform, aqueous and n-hexane extract of ziziphus sativa can be served as
antibacterial agent.
