Abstract
This study investigated the process of Reduplication in English and Urdu. In English, the process of reduplication has limited application, yet in Urdu, reduplication has a very productive value. Various phonological, morphological, syntactical and semantic patterns are involved in making words reduplicated in Urdu. Reduplication in Urdu takes place in two ways: Total Reduplication and Partial Reduplication. Total Reduplication deals with repetition of the full word, whereas Partial Reduplication involves modification in vowels or consonants. This study has focused on Reduplication at morphological level that is responsible for the different ways processed in Urdu and English. English Reduplication works at consonant and vowel level whereas Urdu Reduplication employs the use of Meaningful Adjuncts and Meaningless Adjuncts. Some conjunctions are also used in Urdu to make the word totally or partially reduplicated. It shows the relationship between the base and reduplicant through repetition and modification in word. A Qualitative method was applied to explore the process of Reduplication through document analysis. The documents were primarily books and articles related to Reduplication in English and Urdu at grammatical level. Reduplication is regarded as a type of word–formation process, where new word is formed. Therefore, the productivity of the Reduplication process in English and Urdu is diverse. In English, use of Reduplication process is informal whereas Reduplication in Urdu shows morphological productivity in word.
