Abstract
Ijtihad (interpretation of Islamic jurisprudence) is Islam’s most important quality. Since Allah has gifted every human with a unique brain, it is then inevitable (natural) that people think differently, especially when it comes to Ijtihad (forming personal opinion / interpretation). In every era, from the time of Prophet Muhammad (saw) till today, there have been multiple efforts of Ijtihad (to interpret Islamic jurisprudence) involving various interpretational trends becoming popular. Even in today’s time and era there exists varied trends with respect to Islamic Fiqh. This thesis based on five chapters, is about the modern trends of Islamic jurisprudence found in the Indo-Pak subcontinent. First chapter states the introduction of Islamic jurisprudence and ijtihad (its scholarly interpretation), history, evidence, preconditions of eligibility and enlists selective ijtihad institutions of the Islamic world. Second chapter accounts for history of Islamic jurisprudence and its evolution. This discussion commences with the efforts of Shah Wali Ullah Muhaddis Dehlvi (rehma ullah). He became an example for the later jurists in breaking the ice and initiating reformative trends in the legal interpretation. The chapter also reviews previous work done by discussing selective Islamic rulings.
