Abstract
The purpose of this research paper is to see if redesigned educational spaces have an effect on students who are slow learners. This research will specifically focus on the physical and technological aspects of the classroom and whether or not changes in these areas impact the students’ performance and interest in class. Slow learning students have so many different challenges to overcome when it comes to the traditional classroom so this research really wanted to find out if there were certain modifications to the design of the learning environment that makes it easier on slow learners so they can learn more effectively. The study used a mixed-methods approach: it contained student achievement and engagement as the data to be collected, and observation, interviews and focus groups as qualitative data to support the main data. The study was carried out on 240 middle school students with an experimental group of 120 and a control group of 120. According to the results, students in the experimental group showed significant improvement in their academic scores in the areas of Math, Science, and Language Arts post intervention, compared to the control group. The themes derived from student interviews reflect students’ increased attitudes of comfort, increase in student engagement and enhancement of students’ confidence in academic abilities. The same themes derived from the interviews of teachers to students were positive impact on the learning environment. The short sample duration as well as the small sample size were cited as limitations of this study. Furthermore, over time different parts of the designs working alone or in tandem will become beneficial to the individual. The purpose of this dissertation is to emphasize the criticalness of our educational spaces on the success of so-called slow learners. Through understanding the success of various tweaking’s to enhance students’ success we hope to change the way we go about building our educational spaces to reflect those changes.
