Abstract
There has been a change in etiological reasons for depression and the accepted understanding
of how the brain and body operate, with the former being blamed on an excess of black bile
and the latter on poor neuroplasticity and neuroimmune functioning. The chemical imbalance
theory proposes that the depressed person's brain has an insufficient amount of monoamines,
specifically serotonin, and that this is the biochemical cause of depression. There are several
academic arguments against the chemical imbalance theory being able to provide a satisfactory
explanation for depression and its therapy.
