Abstract
The primary purpose of the study was to know the views of secondary school students towards after-school programs available in the names of academies, tuition centers and coaching cen^rs. The study was aimed at knowing the facts from students perspective. The questions that were answered through this study reveal the information about the reasons for joining after-school programs, time spent by students in different activities after-school, current standard of after-school programs as well as suggestions to improve the existing practices. Data analysis reveals that secondary school students are over-burdened by academic load and they find very little room for non-academic activities. Quantitative data analysis reveals that there was no significant difference in the responses of male/female, public sector or private sector, English Medium and Urdu Medium students. Item analysis further shows the trends in the views of students towards after-school programs. Frequency distribution of responses shows that the pressure of getting admission in colleges as well as the targets set by family and fnends were the most significant reasons for joining after-school programs. Time-graphs show as to how students spend their time after school. Qualitative data analysis strengthened the views further and students explained their point of view of towards after-school programs in detail. Students expressed their daily routine and expressed their views towards their needs. They wanted a balanced routine which could help them to grow as effective members of the community. They want to socialize, play, and participate in healthy activities but do not find sufficient room for all such activities. Though the scope of study was limited to the area of Model Town, Lahore, yet this study can be helpftil for teachers, parents and policy-makers. The results could be generalized by broadening the scope of the study in other parts of the country.
