Abstract
The study aims to explore the impact of digitalization in formal communication practices in Lahore and its subsequent effects on language. Drawing upon the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, the research focuses on integrating digital elements, particularly emojis, within the sociolinguistic framework of formal communication settings. A mixed Method approach was adopted, utilizing both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews conducted from 8 different public and private universities. The study's findings show that emojis have proven to enhance textual expression by adding emotional depth. However, in formal communication, the utilization of emojis is curtailed due to the need for professionalism and adherence to conventional norms. The study demonstrates that digitalization has significantly influenced language, reshaping it through digital tools. Moreover, communicative activities have also been notably impacted by digitalization. It is essential to acknowledge the limitations of this research, namely the reliance on self-reports which may have constrained the scope of the findings. Future research can incorporate a robust longitudinal dataset offering valuable insights into the dynamic nature of digital communication and language.
