Development and validation of extraversion scale for adults in Pakistan

Abstract
In this study an Indigenous Extraversion Scale - Pakistan has been developed and validated. Forty Five items were generated by local students and then processed on. Evaluated by the class, as a whole, 318 participants were administered the scale and data was processed in SPSS for Factor analysis and reliability. Factor analysis provided two factors of positive and negative items separately. The two factor solution covered 30 items for the scale. The selected items had more than 1 eigenvalue. The total variance explained by the scale was 24.18. For determining construct validity a data of 244 participants was compared with three internationally established personality questionnaires namely Eysenck Personality Questionnaire – Revised (Eysenck, Eysenck, & Barrett, 1985) Unwillingness to Communicate Scale (Burgoon, 1976) and Introversion Scale (McCroskey, 1984). Convergent validity was found by correlating the Extraversion Scale – Pakistan with the extraversion subscale of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire – Revised. It showed highly significant positive correlation (r = .60, p < .01). Discriminant validity was found using Introversion Scale (McCroskey, 1984) (r = -.34, p < .01), and Unwillingness to Communicate Scale (Burgoon, 1976) (r = -.36, p < .01). As these constructs were opposite of extraversion they showed significantly negative correlation with Extraversion Scale – Pakistan. The Extraversion Scale – Pakistan having alpha coefficient of .779, can be used indigenously.
