    Sociocultural influences

    This study examined the relationship between sociocultural influences (family, peers, media), body image dissatisfaction (BE-Appearance, BE-Weight, BE-Attribution) and eating problems in university students. It was hypothesized that (a) sociocultural influences would be positively linked with eating problems, (b) sociocultural influences would be positively linked with body image dissatisfaction, (c) body image dissatisfaction would be positively linked with eating problems, (d) body image dissatisfaction would mediate the relationship between sociocultural influences and eating problem and (e) there would be gender differences in sociocultural influences, body image dissatisfaction and eating problems. A cross-sectional study was conducted where a sample of 181 participants (men = 91; women = 89) was selected (Mage = 21.87 years, SD = 1.88) from a private university by using convenience sampling. An online self-administered survey was conducted with validated measures including Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-4) (Schaefer et al., 2015), Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA) (Mendelson et al., 2001) and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) (Garner et al., 1982). Pearson Product Moment correlation, independent samples t-tests, and mediation analysis were conducted to analyze the data. The results indicated that sociocultural influences (family, peers, media) were positively associated with body image dissatisfaction (BE-Appearance, BE-Weight) and eating problems. Body image dissatisfaction (BE-Appearance, BE-Weight) was positively correlated with eating problems, while it also mediated between sociocultural influences (family, peers, media) and eating problems. Women showed significantly more eating problems than men. The study has implications for prevention and intervention with reference to media literacy programs, counseling and psychoeducation.
