Synthesis and characterization of tio2@cu(ii) metal-organic framework for water splitting
(UMT, Lahore, 2025) Muhammad Usama Naeem
The research work to identify the alternative source that is worthwhile, having renewability and could be sustainable is in underway. The most effective pathway for the production of hydrogen and oxygen is the splitting of water by electrochemically. Through parallel catalytic action Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction an efficient two-in-one catalyst is essential for improving electrochemical water-splitting performance. In this study, a simple and environmentally benign hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize copper-based metal-organic framework (CuMOF) and it’s composite with titanium dioxide or Titania (TiO₂@CuMOF). The synthesized materials were thoroughly characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier- Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX) techniques. Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) was used as the working electrode, which was modified with the synthesized catalysts to perform electrochemical tests. Among the synthesized materials, the TiO₂@CuMOF composite with 8.98 wt% TiO₂ exhibited superior electrocatalytic performance, demonstrating lower onset potential, reduced overpotential, favorable Tafel slope, lower charge transfer resistance, and enhanced double-layer capacitance. The synergistic interaction between CuMOF and TiO₂ is believed to enhance the charge separation and active surface area, leading to improved catalytic activity.
