    Signal design for hussain chowk
(UMT.Lahore, 2021) Muhammad Ali; Muhammad Shahan Tanveer; Muhammad Waseem; Yasir Sohail
The rapid development of urban regions has resulted in a n increased number of private vehicles, which often ausgestionndllution.Thetrafficcircleis a streetintersectionwheretrafficmoves a singleway arounda focalislandto arriveatoneofthestreetsmergingonit.Roundabouts are erallysuitableforlighter traffic volumes. However, the increased traffic volumes in cities have taken a toll on the performance of roundabouts. For example, Hussain Chowk is a roundabout in Lahore which is experiencing congestion problems. Thisstudy aimed at evaluatingthe current performance and proposing an alternative solution in the form of a signalizedintersection. Theperformance analysiswas conducted using a simulation software called Synchro. The traffic counts and geometric data were collected by visiting the site. Initially, theperformance of the existingroundabout was evaluated, which indicated that the roundabout was failingto serve the traffic, particularly during peak hours. Then, an alternative solution i.e., a signalized intersection at the place of Hussain Chowk was analyzed using the simulation. The lane configuration and phasing schemes were carefullydecided to obtain the best possible solution in terms of average delays. The results indicated that the signalized intersection hasthe potential to perform better than the existing roundabout.
