Item Masjid Wazir Khan(UMT Lahore, 2024-04-25) Muhammad Faizan AzamIntroduction (Background / Inspiration): During Shah Jahan’s reign architecture flourished across the Mughal Empire. His famous masterpieces include the Taj Mahal and the tomb of his wife Mumtaz. Another architectural masterpiece of Shah Jahan's era, the Wazir Khan Mosque, which is located deep within the old quarter of the ancient walled city of Lahore. It was built by the governor (or wazir) of the Punjab, Hakim Sheikh Ilm-ud-din Ansari. The construction of the mosque commenced in 1634. A short walk away from the Lahore Fort, the mosque acquired political importance as it became the official destination for the emperor's Friday congregational prayer. Objectives of Project: Wazir Khan Mosque inspired me because the detailed Islamic design and architecture of the mosque takes you back to the time when Muslims ruled over the subcontinent. The complicated fine patterns decorating the walls – mosaic design also known as kasha kari, fresco painting, engraved stones and brick outline fresco (taza kari) that add to the mosque’s uniqueness is also another reason of my inspiration. The unique blend of calligraphy, geometrical shapes, Persian motifs and floral patterns lends an unhindered touch of grandiosity and opulence to the building. Plan of Work: The major I chose for my thesis is "Home Textiles” where I'll be working on different home textile products embraced with complicated yet beautiful motifs and designs of Masjid Wazir Khan. Exploring different textile techniques and materials, each of my products will be displayed with the most exquisite patterns and motifs, adding a small touch of Islamic art in today's interior, thus creating a perfect blend of ancient art with contemporary home textile products. A perfect way to celebrate the beauty of our ancestor's art in our own modern way. Expected Outcomes: The purpose of working on this theme is to recall people, the era where Muslims used to be in power and the time where religion Islam flourished. The time when Islamic art was at its peak and the designs mesmerized every looking soul. The main objective is to show the glimpse of our glorious past in the veil of modern art style.
