Emotional intelligence as predictor of occupational stress and self-efficacy among secondary school teachers
    (UMT.Lahore, 2018) Maryam Awan
Various studies, in international framework, have linked emotional intelligence to occupational stress and self-efficacy of teachers. However, to examine the relationship between these three factors in this perspective was limited. Therefore, the study was conducted on the emotional intelligence as predictor of occupational stress and self-efficacy among secondary school teachers of Lahore. Emotional Intelligence (EI) involves behaviors related to the experience of emotion; specifically EI which involves expressing, recognizing, understanding and managing emotions. Despite the interest in workplace EI, very little empirical research has examined the role it may play in occupational stress and self-efficacy. This study systematically and empirically examines the relationship between EI, occupational stress and self-efficacy process among secondary school teachers. The aim of this study was to find and identify the relationship between emotional intelligence, occupational stress and self-efficacy among secondary school teachers. The research was quantitative in nature. A survey research design was used to attain target of the study. Simple random sampling technique was used for data collection. The data were collected through questionnaires on emotional intelligence as predict of occupational stress and self-efficacy among secondary school teachers. Questionnaire was consisted of (40) items. The total numbers of respondents were 550. From public secondary school, 275 teachers were selected and form private secondary school 275 teachers were selected. Before data collection from the research participants’, formal permission was taken from the Head of Departments. Quantitative data obtained through the instruments was analyzed by the researcher through descriptive statistic and correlation analysis by using Statistical Package Social Sciences (SPSS). The result indicates overall participants were fully aware about emotional intelligence, occupational stress and self-efficacy. The finding of current study confirms that emotional intelligence has weak relationship with occupational stress while on the other hand; emotional intelligence has strong relationship with self-efficacy. For further recommendation, research suggests that training programs and workshops that focus on the skills associated with EI should be developed for teachers during their jobs. The Ministry of Education should develop policies that will reduce the occupational stress on job place. It was possible that enhancing a teacher’s EI may have a positive influence on his/her sense of self-efficacy. Key Words: Emotional intelligence (EI), occupational stress (OP), self-efficacy (SE), Secondary school teacher
