THE EFFECTS OF MILITARY COUPS ON THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF PAKISTAN
    (UMT.lahore, 2022-07-05) MEHMOOD UL HASSAN
Current study is meant to explore the role of army in political affairs of Pakistan. Specifically, it is carried out to highlight the key effects of General Musharraf’s military coup. It has highlighted the effects of Musharraf's regime on the constitution and the national security institutions of the country. In order to achieve these objectives in a befitting manner the researcher has implemented content analysis as a methodological framework as most of the data for analysis is of secondary nature. The data was collected from library sources i.e. books, journals, articles, newspapers, columns and web contents. The results indicate that lack of political awareness, weak political institutions and lack of civil society mobilization, are the chief reasons that give way for military coup in Pakistan. The constitution was suspended and courts were directed to give validity and justification to Musharraf’s coup. Legal Framework Order was issued instead of constitution and judges were asked to take oath under Provincial Constitutional Order PCO. While with regard to effects on Security Institutions, the regime’s participation in War of Terror brought the war into Pakistan. Islamic militancy, suicidal attacks, unrest in the country, attacks on army and other security related institutions became the matter of everyday life in Pakistan.
