A revival of vintage asethetics in textile design
    (UMT Lahore, 2025-08-08) Laiba Waheed
The creative potential of retro art as a source of inspiration for modern textile design is examined in this thesis. This project reinterprets retro motifs, color palettes, and design sensibilities to produce a new, expressive textile line that draws inspiration from the nostalgic appeal of mid-century aesthetics. In order to create creative textile designs appropriate for both fashion and interior use, the study explores the visual language of retro culture, which includes its striking graphic patterns, whimsical compositions, and unique hues. The initial phase of this project involves investigation of the origins and evolution of retro art with a focus on design moments from the 1950 to 1980. This is involved looking at the old posters, ads, fabrics from the popular culture. Getting inspiration from good sources, design publications, online sources and galleries. I investigate their visual characters, their color schemes, symbolic meanings and the cultural significance. I made a design concept that combines my own creative style with a retro art aesthetics. First of all, I made rough sketches to try different geometric shapes, abstract patterns and bright and retro colors. After that, I turned this idea into digital designs using software (Photoshop). I experimented layers and repeat patterns so that I make a design more impressive and interesting. In all this process, my work improved because of the feedback from my supervisor. I tried different ways for my digital illustration, mixed media and hand-drawn artwork. By using these methods, I managed feel of old paintings into colors of textile patterns. Each design's emotional tone and storytelling potential were carefully considered in an effort to arouse feelings of cosiness, happiness, and eternal inventiveness. In order to make the designs a reality, appropriate fabrication methods like digital textile printing, hand and machine embroidery were taken into consideration. The final collection demonstrates how modern interpretations of vintage art may emerge in textile designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and culturally relevant, fusing traditional beauty with cutting-edge creativity.
