An ethnographic study of identity construction as Police Women and/or Women Police
(University of Management and Technology Lahore, 2017) Khalid Mahmood
The purpose of this study is to explore those masculine linguistic choices which women use to construct POLICEwomen identity (construction of police identity prior to natural feminine identity) in addition to WOMENpolice identity (construction of natural feminine identity prior to police) to counter the challenges of hegemonic masculine police workplace. A purposive sample of twenty seven (27) policewomen of different cadres of Punjab Police, Pakistanserving at two police stations i.e., mixed-gender and women police stations was selected to address the research questions. Participant observation and field interviews were carried out to collect the data. Culver's (2013) four phased theory and model of Gender Identity Development of Women in the Military (GIDWM) was adapted as two phased theory and analytical model of Linguistic Identity of Women in Police (LIWP) to analyze the data. The linguistic repertoire of the participants showcased dual identities i.e., POLICEwomen and/or WOMENpolice which were observed most of the time if not always. The same results were found while analyzing the data on the basis of participants' service, seniority and contexts of duties. The study recommends gender friendly policies in the security agencies of Pakistan.

    Globalization and the nations state
(3rd International Conference on Business Management (ICoBM), UMT, Lahore, Pakistan, 2013) Khalid Mahmood
The term 'globalization' is multi-dimensional. “A globalised world is one in which political, economic, cultural, and social events become more interconnected....by Globalization, we mean the increase of connectedness between societies” (Baylis, et al, 2008:8). As defined by Torres (2001) it is a process of rapid economic integration among countries driven by the liberalization of trade, investment and capital flows, as well as technological change. In other words globalization is intensification of economic, social and cultural relations across international borders. Therefore, globalization has led to the enhancement of interconnectedness and interdependence of countries. The interdependence is related to flow of capital and technology. The rapid dominance of globalization can be seen during the period of liberalism of the 19th century, the relative stability after the World War I and the golden years of the 1950s and 1960s. Towards this end, the WTO (World Trade Organization) was formed as a reincarnation of the ITO (International Trade Organization) after the World War II. With its formation, the principles of liberalism, multilateralism and nondiscrimination were achieved. This then shows a tendency towards globalism (Sugiura, 1999).

Impact of Knowledge Management Practices and Human Capital on Organizational Performance
    (UMT.Lahore, 2013-02) Khalid Mahmood
Prevalent competitive era has highlighted the importance of Knowledge as an important organizational resource. Its effective management is considered to be an antecedent to success, hence making the subject a ‘hot button’ for the practitioners and researchers. However, the domain of research has mostly been restricted to profit sector. Due to its peculiar context and secrecy compulsions, the research in the Armed Forces is sparse. This study, while not touching the red lines, is first of its kind in Pakistan that broadly investigates the impact of knowledge management practices and human capital on the organizational performance of Pakistan Security Forces. Due to current challenges to Low Intensity Conflict being faced by Pakistan Security Forces, where the adversary is under the curtains and operational environment are complex and multi-dimensional, Pakistan Security Forces now need an informative and a thinking soldier, i.e. who is innovative and creative to fight this menace. To lead such a body of troops, their superior officers are ought to be knowledgeable, skillful and embedded with leadership traits who can ensure performance differences.

Due to current challenges to Low Intensity Conflict being faced by Pakistan Security Forces , where the adversary is under the curtains and operational environment are complex and multi dimensional, Pakistan Security Forces now need an informative and a thinking soldiers, i.e. who is innovative and creative to fight this menace. To lead such a body of troops, their superior officers are ought to be knowledgeable, skillful and embedded with leadership traits who can ensure performance differences. Measuring organizational performance in the context of Armed Forces is a complex issue. However, based on existing literature, a theoretical framework and a research model was conceptualized to ascertain the relation between Knowledge Management Practices and human capital on the organizational performance of Pakistan Security Forces. Field survey was conducted by using a questionnaire adapted from corporate sector and modified to the context having closed-ended questions. Questionnaires were administered amongst 300 respondents. Out of 250 received, 203 usable questionnaires were utilized for data analysis in SPSS. Statistical analyses revealed a positive significant relationship between Knowledge Management Practices and human capital on the organizational performance. It was also found that resourcefulness moderates relationship between human capital of officers and organizational performance of Pakistan Security Forces. The research findings are consistent with the previous research in the field of Knowledge Management. The study also contributed to theory by extending the Knowledge Management research within the Armed Forces context. Moreover, from the managerial perspective, the findings gave clear indications that would allow Armed Forces to understand the implications of Knowledge Management on organizational performance and to use this knowledge for implementing efficient and effective Knowledge Management. The findings can be utilized for policy making decisions.

Leadership style, culture and commitment: an analytical study of university libraries in Pakistan
(DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2014) Muhammad Rafiq Awan; Khalid Mahmood; Haroon Idrees
This study aims to find relationship of leadership style of Chief Librarians, with organizational culture and employee commitment in university libraries in Pakistan. Data for the research were collected through a survey of public and private sector universities in Punjab (province) and federal capital of Pakistan. The university libraries having more than three library professionals were included in selected sample. The perception of Chief Librarians’ leadership style was taken from their subordinate professionals and its relationship was found with the culture of organization and job commitment. 115 respondents’ data, collected through structured questionnaire, based on t-test, Chi-square and ANOVA tests to find the relationship among relevant variables has been presented in this paper. No significant relationship was found between leadership style and organizational culture in public sector universities, while private sector university libraries exhibit that there is significant relationship between leadership style and organizational cultures in private sector universities. There is no relationship between leadership style and employee commitment in public and private sector university libraries. A significant relationship between organizational culture and employee commitment in was found in both private and public sector universities.

A novel modeling in mathematical biology for classification of signal peptides
(Scientific Reports, 2018) Asma Ehsan; Khalid Mahmood; Yaser Daanial Khan; Sher Afzal Khan; Chou, Kuo-Chen
The molecular structure of macromolecules in living cells is ambiguous unless we classify them in a scientifc manner. Signal peptides are of vital importance in determining the behavior of newly formed proteins towards their destined path in cellular and extracellular location in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. In the present research work, a novel method is ofered to foreknow the behavior of signal peptides and determine their cleavage site. The proposed model employs neural networks using isolated sets of prokaryote and eukaryote primary sequences. Protein sequences are classifed as secretory or non-secretory in order to investigate secretory proteins and their signal peptides. In comparison with the previous prediction tools, the proposed algorithm is more rigorous, wellorganized, signifcantly appropriate and highly accurate for the examination of signal peptides even in extensive collection of protein sequences.
