Sensitivity, mental health and psychological distress in undergraduate university students
(UMT Lahore, 2024) Kainat Taj; Saira Bano
This study considers the relationship between sensitivity, mental health and psychological distress among undergraduate students. It was hypothesized that there will be a relationship between sensitivity, mental health and psychological distress among undergraduate students. It was also hypothesized that sensitivity and mental health will likely predict psychological distress among undergraduate students. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, a sample of 200 undergraduate students, age range 18-25 years (M=21.5; SD= 1.45) of both genders, from various universities were selected for data collection. Standardized questionnaires were used as assessment measures including Highly Sensitive Person Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse data. The results indicated a significant positive correlation between high sensitivity, mental health and psychological distress. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions that focus on enhancing emotional regulation and fostering secure attachment styles among undergraduate students. By promoting healthy relationships and providing psychological support in educational institutions, it can help mitigate the adverse effects of high sensitivity on mental health.
