Role of Legal Regimes in the Empowerment of Women in Pakistan
(UMT, Lahore, 2019) Haider Ali Khan
This paper discusses the current situation of women empowerment in Pakistan and how far legal regimes concerning sexual harassment advance this cause. Initially it is discussed what constitutes women empowerment and what its status is in Pakistan. We consider whether our legal system is equipped with adequate remedies to overcome sexual harassment and discrimination at workplaces, which shall naturally lead us to examine the legal regime of sexual harassment in Pakistan. To create a better understanding of Pakistan’s legal regime and possible gaps and lacunas a comparative analysis is made with the Indian, Bangladeshi and USA’s example, after which this paper embarks upon an analysis of the gaps in Pakistan’s legal regime and recommendations to address them.
