Authentic leadership as perceived by private secondary school teachers of punjab in pakistan
    (UMT, Lahore, 2008) FARAH RAHMAN
The debate about leaders either being bom with leadership traits or can be developed through training always has been discussed extensively in literature. Researchers have developed Great Man theory, Trait approach. Leadership Behaviors, Leadership Styles and Situational theory to solve the puzzle of leadership in the 19^ century. Authentic leadership is another dimension in order to solve the mystery of sustainable and genuine leadership. Leadership plays a pivotal role in school. As research scholar, I strongly felt the urge to address this issue due to my experience in finding a lack of authenticity and commitment in leaders of Pakistani Schools. The issue of absenteeism and tum over is very common in schools in Pakistan. Leaders mle their followers with power instead of empowerment. This is by and large attributed to authoritarian leadership. There are leaders who consider themselves as democratic, but their actions indicate dictatorial modes of leadership. Therefore, self-awareness in leadership is very important along with honesty, truthfulness, loyalty, transparency and integrity, which are the main characteristics of authentic leadership. Pakistan is an Islamic State and the dominant rehgion gives a concept of leadership that is spiritual, honest and transparent, which is akin to authentic leadership, as this type of leadership is considered to be ethically and morally sovmd. The rationale of this quantitative research is to explore the leadership authenticity of private secondary school principals of Punjab Province as perceived by principals themselves and their teachers. Population was all private secondary schools of Punjab Province. Sample comprised of 19 private secondary school principals and 190 private secondary school teachers. Convenient sampling technique was used to collect data. The same questiormaire was used for the principals and teachers. Authentic Leadership Questiormaire (Avolio, Gardner and Walumbwa (2007) was adopted to measure the authenticity of private secondary school principals. The questiormaire has sixteen items and further divided into four subscales to measure the leader's self awareness, transparency, moral/ethical values and balanced processing. 11 All computations were done by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 16). Reliability of the ALQ Questionnaire was .886. Reliability of Transparency was .729, Ethical/Moral was.629. Balanced Processing was .659 and Self Awareness was .775. Mean, standard Deviation and t test were used to compare principals' self rating and teachers' rating regarding the authenticity level of Transparency, Ethical/Moral, Balanced Processing and Self Awareness. Major findings indicated that majority of the school principals rated themselves high in Transparency, Ethical/Moral, Balanced Processing and Self Awareness as compare to their teachers' rating regarding the mentioned four sub scales. On the basis of the findings it was recommended that school leaders need training in the area of authentic leadership. Moreover, future research is needed in order to observe the correlation of leader's authenticity and school's performance.
