Item A survey based study of indexicality in saraiki language in district rajan pur(UMT Lahore, 2024) Abdul HananIndexicality refers to the way in which signs or expressions point to or indicate aspects of the context in which they are used, such as the speaker's identity, location, or social relationships. The main goal of this study is to investigate the significance and perception of distal and proximal locatives of spatial Indexicals in Saraiki, especially in the Saraiki-speaking community in the Rajan Pur district. This study uncovers the linguistic phenomenon of indexicality in the Saraiki language using Robert Dixon’s (2010) Basic Linguistic Theory theoretical framework. The utilization of a mixed-method approach with exploratory research design is employed in order to examine and evaluate patterns of Saraiki language usage, ultimately providing significant insights into the social aspects of language and contextual factors such as cultural norms and spatial awareness within the Saraiki-speaking community. In qualitative research, interviews were conducted employing the research instrument of Robert Wilkins (1999) questionnaire. For quantitative research, a survey-based questionnaire was used, which was analyzed by using SPSS software. The researcher selected a sample of Saraiki Speakers. The sample was mostly from the southern part of Punjab, especially Rajanpur. The results show that Saraiki speakers use Ae, Idy, and Ithan Saraiki indexicals as proximal locatives, and Udy, Oo, and Uthan Saraiki indexicals as distal locatives in Rajanpur. Indexicality not only deepens our knowledge about spatial indexicals, but also enables us to apply them in specific contexts. The results indicate that the majority of the Saraiki community in District Rajanpur uses spatial indexicals such as distal and proximal locatives in the Saraiki language. This study aims to promote Saraiki’s continued development as a dynamic and essential component of Pakistan’s diverse linguistic and cultural tapestry through the integration of language preservation and cultural revitalization.
