Challenges in early childhood education of students with hearing impairment

Hearing impairments in early childhood present unique challenges for both educators and parents, requiring specialized teaching methods and support. This qualitative study examines the experiences of 20 participants (12 teachers and 8 parents) involved in Early Childhood Education (ECE) for hearing-impaired children in Lahore. The literature highlights the emotional, social, and practical struggles faced by families and educators in this context, with limited research on effective strategies for addressing these challenges. The research design employed semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions, allowing participants to share their perspectives on communication barriers, instructional adjustments, and emotional coping mechanisms. The findings reveal significant communication difficulties, a lack of resources, and the need for collaborative efforts between educators and parents to support the children‘s educational and developmental needs. The study concludes that both teachers and parents face considerable challenges in supporting hearing-impaired children, with a need for better resources and professional training. It recommends increased collaboration and resource allocation to improve outcomes for these children.
