    Role and Impact of Aligarh Movement during Colonial Era

    One of the major movements instituted during British colonial era (1858-1947) in order to safeguard the true image and strength of Muslims was the Aligarh Movement. Depending on their ideologies, most of the movements were either intended to be religious or political, but Aligarh Movement kept both the purposes into account; though this movement was labeled only as an educational endeavour; not only this but its exponent, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, was blamed to be serving the British rulers. As a result, his religious services were shadowed by the controversies waged by his peers. Major objective of the study was to bring his religious contributions to light and reintroduce his personality also as a leader who worked on Seerat and Tafseer among other works from the same domain. This study was conducted by carrying out research on the relevant books and available material in the libraries and online resources. During the study, the facts revealed that the Aligarh Movement proved to be a stepping stone to provide an educational platform to the Muslims of the Subcontinent, but its religious approach was underestimated – mostly because of prejudices against this school of thought. After the research, findings of the study revealed that on the one hand, this movement was one of a kind in promoting modern education among Muslims, and on the other, debates, exegeses, translations, interpretations etc. of Islamic sources were also made available to cater for spiritual gratification of the Muslims. So the history of Islamic services in the Subcontinent, especially during the British colonial era, cannot be completely understood if this movement is considered only educational.
