Item Thumb recognition system(UMT.Lahore, 2009) Hafsa MateenThumbprint recognition is part of biometric recognition as it uses anatomical (face, thumbprint, etc.) and behavioral (signatures etc.) characteristics for recognition which are called biometric identifiers. It is a promising approach for recognition as the biometric identifiers are unique and permanent. A thumbprint consists of ridges (and alternately valleys) that curve in a spiral pattern. The merging and branching of these ridges creates a number of sub-patterns which are called minutiae. The overwhelming majority of the thumbprint recognition approaches have relied on these minutiae. The primary purpose of tihe current paper is to provide an up-to-date survey of the literature in the field. A secondary purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic and comparative view of the approaches and algorithms in the field which can give some insights into the problem.
