Item Socio-political and economic milieu and its effect on english as a foreign language (eel) classroom(UMT, Lahore, 2009) Riaz-ud-DinThis study is concerned with factors outside the four walls of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom and their effect on the leamability of English language. The study looks into the social, political and economic background of the learners and obtains the relevant data via a questionnaire. The scores on the questionnaire are then ascertained through correlation with the scores on a written comprehension test in English. The main purpose here is to find out whether the dominant discourses (social background of the learners) do have any effect on the English language leamability of the learners. No significant effect of the social background of the learners is found from the findings of our calculations. The results show that the theory of reproduction does not hold true in the area under study (Pakistan). The test scores are further analyzed for any differences in the scores on the test in English social class-wise. There are no marked differences between the upper, middle and lower classes. In the second step of this study an audio-recording is done of an English language class room dynamics. The findings from the transcription once again show that the 'English only' policy of reproduction is not followed by the teacher in his class-room. The observations and transcriptions reveal that the students get hold of the 'agency' through a policy of resistance (not responding in English (L2) to the teacher's queries). The results are encouraging i.e. there is no top-down monolithic implementation of any abstract method(s) in the class-room; rather there is an element of resistance and co-constmction on the part of leamers making the classroom dynamics discursive and rich.
