Rapid urbanization, population growth, and rising poverty have created a housing crisis across African cities, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where over 60% of urban residents live in informal settlements. The study examines how socio-economic factors such as income disparity, unemployment, and lack of access to finance exacerbate this crisis. It investigates how design innovations, including modular housing, alternative building materials, and climate-responsive design, can offer affordable and sustainable housing solutions. Additionally, the research highlights the role of government policies and institutional frameworks in shaping the affordable housing sector. Through case studies, the thesis proposes practical strategies to bridge the gap between innovative housing solutions and the socio-economic conditions of African urban dwellers. The findings provide recommendations for policy makers, urban planners, and developers on how to incorporate design innovations into affordable housing projects that are financially viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially inclusive.enBRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN DESIGN INNOVATION AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC REALITIES: A COMPARISON OF AFRICA AND PAKISTANThesis
