But technological advancement in the field of gems and jewelry has created great challenge for the traditional art of jewelry manufacturing in Pakistan. Due to many factors, the jewelry industry is stagnant and unable to appropriate its rightful share from the domestic and international markets. Jewelry manufacturing training is based on the centuries-old apprenticeship system which is unable to meet the current challenges of industrialization and global competitiveness. The current study focuses on the identification of the reasons for lack of competitiveness and growth of the Pakistani jewelry industry, explores the benefits and pitfalls of technology adoption and up-gradation, assesses the willingness of manufacturers and artisans for their adoption of the technology, and identifies some important technologies for better adoption. The study provides a better understanding of the nature of the workforce and the factors that potentially influence the introduction of modern technology. A field survey was designed after consultation with industry representatives. 220 respondents representing all major stakeholders, from all major cities of Pakistan, provided the data. Analysis revealed that Pakistan has a huge skilled, experienced and motivated workforce which understands its deficiencies regarding global competitiveness and the benefits of modern technology. The respondents expressed clear willingness to adopt modern technology and identified the preferred technologies. Transformation of jewellery industry through modern technology requires understanding the specific needs of the industry, and basic characteristics of industry stakeholders, before introducing the desired technologies while simultaneously safeguarding the basic infrastructure and understanding the consequences faced by the artisans during and after the intervention of modern technology.enNeed assessment for introducing modern technology in jewelry industryThesis
