This study adopted a social-psychological perspective on language acquisitionthat focused on the role of self-efficacy in learning. The study investigated the self-efficacy beliefs of low level learners, the factors affecting self-efficacy beliefs and the role of self-efficacy beliefs in interaction with others in target language. The study interviewed five low-level English languagelearners (ELLs) from English speaking classregarding their experiences and their self-efficacy beliefs abouttheir ability to use their English. Their views were analyzed qualitatively and five major themes were found: the expectations ofEnglish language learners, learning challenges, the participants’ self-assessment of their abilities, interaction with others in target language, and the participants’ learning environment.
